2008 ARRL Field Day

07/13/2008 | W8EDU The CASE AMATEUR RADIO CLUB, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH once again hosted a 1A Field Day event in Huntsburg, Ohio.

FD 2008 was one of the best in recent years. The bands were surprisingly decent, the stations worked perfectly and even the wx cooperated for the most part. All of the operators had fun and enjoyed plenty of time on the air. The MOBILE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS CLUB, W3USA, shared the Field Day site with W8EDU again this year. Its an awesome Field Day location, with plenty of room for both stations.

Unfortunately, this magnificent Field Day site is in danger of being destroyed by the proposed construction of a 138 kV transmission line corridor RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE. The corridor, proposed by FirstEnergy, would entail construction of a sixty foot wide, clear cut path with eighty foot tall poles and towers.

The community has no intention of taking this sort of attack by an arrogant, merciless $32.4 billion corporation and an uncaring, selfish government without a fight. Hundreds of property owners and others have formed Citizens Advocating Responsible Energy (CARE), a non-profit organization dedicated to finding an environmentally and socially responsible solution to FirstEnergys claimed needs.

Please visit www.caregeauga.org and www.huntsburg.org to learn more about this horrific, misguided proposal, how the community is going to stop it, and how you can become involved. This is a war to preserve family heritage, green space, and a top-notch Field Day location. -- W8WTS
