2008 ARRL September VHF Contest

09/24/2008 | KM3G It was a fun contest! I usually go out with N3YRR and KB3CJE to work the bottom 4 in FM19AW near McConnellsburg, PA. The forecast called for rain all Saturday, so we decided to call off the group effort. I ended up going up on the mountain myself on Sunday, but only for a few hours. It was enough for just over 5000 points!
I managed to work the entire contest on a large gel-cel and a marine battery without any difficulties.
You can see the homebrew wheel mount/rotor/tilt-over mil pole mast/wooden bracket assembly with the bottom 4 antennas in the one pic. It all tilts over onto the plastic horse quite nicely by means of a pivot joint just above the rotor. It's a one person setup, but it's not all that fast. My XYL is finally used to the 2x4 mounts being on the van roof rack permanently. :-) Going to try to work weak signal digital modes next time on 6 meters to get more grids! Had a lot of fun!
