2008 ARRL 10 Meter Contest

12/15/2008 | K5BZH Had been looking forward to the Ten Meter Contest, my total 10 meter CW confirmations stand at 24. A great opportunity to increase it. My phone confirmations for ten are only 12. Paying more attention now as I decided it would be neat to have a 5 Band WAS.

Ten started off deader than a doornail Friday night (local time). I checked last years logs and found I had worked several contesters during the first 3 hours in that one. Well the sunspot activity has not been good, it was after dusk, maybe Saturday would be better. No such luck. Sunday morning was no better.

The Ether Gods of the Texas Panhandle finally woke up after a rather lengthy nap in the very last part of the contest. At 2113Z I heard AD5IT from Mississippi on SSB. Gave him a call and worked him. Well at least I would be able to file a log. Still didnt hear others.
Came back later and tuned the band again, found the band with a little activity. At 2225Z I worked NY0V in Iowa on CW. At 2227 worked W0EWD, also in Iowa. I wound up making 25 QSOs, 3 on SSB and 22 on CW.

The good openings seemed to be to Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. The best path had to be to Minnesota. I did work other states including Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico plus 2 DX stations (Mexico and Argentina).

The good news is that Bob, W0BH, in Kansas, provided me with a ten meter CW contact, needed that one. In checking my spreadsheets I realized that I also worked two states (Mississippi and Minnesota) on phone that I need confirmed.

73, Jim -- K5BZH
