2009 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2009 | KA0IQT This year I decided to operate QRP. I dug out my Elecraft KX1 and my Palm Radio Portable Key (PPK) that I acquired from Morse Express a few years ago. My entire station took up less desk space than a book.

Running 2 Watts into a wire antenna strung in the trees, it took about an hour before 40 Meters settled down and I was able to make my first QSO of 2009 with AE4AV, Mike in North Carolina. Mike did a great job pulling my 2 Watts out of the QRM.

My only regret of the evening was not being able to work one of the K3Y/ stations that the Straight Key Century Club (SKCC) ran for SKN this year. There were far too many callers for my QRP signal to make it through the pileups.

It was great hearing all of the vintage gear on the air. I'm definitely looking forward to SKN again next year.
