2009 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/21/2009 | N0JK A "tough" contest with NO tropo or aurora noted. Very windy Saturday, which made aiming the antennas difficult. Even "routine" contacts like N0LL and KB0HH were not easy from the Cattle Pens. Highlight of the contest was working W9RM EN52 on 6 Meter SSB Sunday morning at 1416 UTC via meteor scatter. I was running just 10 watts and a 2 el yagi. Jay was very loud on bursts. I was QRV during the time frame of the Es opening, but it did not reach south central Kansas. The Es cloud was located over FN03, beyond my radio horizon. K1TOL FN44 noted working as far west as N0PB EM39. The Es dropped a few grids east of EM18. If the cloud had drifted just a little ways west... On the positive - the weather both days hit 60 deg F, making for pleasant winter portable operating. -- N0JK
