RE: A few Photos and Comments from our K2IRT Field Day Operations, June 2009
Once again, for the 2009 Field Day Activities, our K2IRT group got together at the historic 1905 Hammels Power Substation. (Rockaway, Queens-NYC)
It is a challenge for our club, as we do not have clear open spaces to set up antenna equipment, though between the main Power Station and the Railroad Control Tower, overlooking Jamaica Bay, we take advantage of every little space.
This year we installed our ever-faithful Mosley TA-33 on a 30 tower. According to the good people at Mosley, using repair parts data; our antenna is 50 years of age! Its stellar performance will serve K2IRT for many ears to come.
On the Control Tower we installed a 160M Hamstick, the Hustler 5BTV and an array of 6Meter - 2.meter and 70cm beams, with rotator, on a tripod secured with track bags of Railroad Ballast stones and sand.
The 40 and 80 Meter band was rounded out with wire beams and dipoles.
Through out the year we meet and plan strategy for Field day. Each year, it seems we get better and better at antenna construction and operating practices.
During the early part of Field day activities, Mike Lisenco N2YBB (The ARRL Section Manager-New York City & Long Island) visited our installation. He seemed impressed with our antenna arrays, operating stations and of course, the magnificent views of Jamaica bay from the tower. (He also loved the Lionel Style switching machine that directs the famous A train from the island to New York City)
Using the UHF-VHF equipment , Charlie Maulick-WB2YZX made several contacts via satellite. We even joined in the pile up as the International Space Station flew by.
There was soo much more going on as our expert team of CW operators banged away at the keys piling up the contacts. Page after page of log sheets were filled out!
A most enjoyable time was had by all and after the Field Day was concluded, no doubt each member of K2IRT got a well deserved nights sleep!
