2009 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)

11/23/2009 | K8BZ

I had a limited amount of time to work the contest this year, and wanting to keep the Clean Sweep mug collection growing I decided to try to work all 80 sections in 80 QSOs for a maximum possible score with the minimum number of contacts. Obviously the entry category had to be U. I knew that I would need the assistance of spots if I had a chance at the sweep in 80 QSOs. I couldnt get started until 2 hours into the contest and most everyone had a 100 or more QSO head start on me anyway. It was nice to finally get some use out of 15 meters for the first hour of operating. By the time I called it quits for the night at about 05:30Z, I was down to my last 5 sections: MB, NT, SK, NL, and NLI. The next morning I was able to pick up MB, SK and NL without the assistance of spots. NT finally showed up on the spots on 20 meters but the band wasnt open at my QTH yet. I heard several stations calling but couldnt hear my 79th section answering them. After about 45 minutes VE8EV was starting to come through. Within another 5 minutes he was strong enough for a QSO. Then I was down to North Long Island. While searching for other sections I had heard NLI make QSOs with several stations, but they were always answering calls and not making their own. NLI finally showed up on spots on 20 meters but I was in the skip zone and couldnt hear them. I was receiving several New England stations very strong on 40 and it looked like my best bet to find them. I would start at the low end and tune to the top of the band and then start over, checking each station in hopes of finding my final section. One pass after another and no NLI. No new spots were popping up. Just the same one on 20 meters and I would check every few minutes and still couldnt here them. Finally a 40 meter spot showed up for KX2P. Jeff was a regular and we had worked in several previous SS contests. There was a pretty good pile up calling. There were apparently lots of stations that needed NLI to complete a sweep. After several calls the sweep was completed with over 11 hours of contest time left. It worked out just right. I closed out the log with 80 QSO/Section and shut down the station and left with the XYL for the other days commitments. It was a blast, as usual. Better band conditions, excellent participation and sportsmanship. 73, Steve, K8BZ
