2009 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)

12/02/2009 | KC4HW Thanks to everyone for the contacts in SS Phone! Had a great time!

Started on 20m and as a Low Power entry I am not sure that was a good decision, 20m was very crowded! My 20m antenna is pretty high for a US contest, and I have been remiss in getting the second one up to complete the stack. Perhap 40m would have been a better starting point. Nevertheless, had good results throughout the contest. 15m was very good on Sunday. 40m was good during the entire contest. I had an 80m inverted vee that worked pretty good.

Did not let a poor start keep me from sticking to it. I had a goal of a Clean Sweep and 1200 QSOs. Unfortunately I missed the Sweep by one, missing NT. I looked everywhere for VE8 and certainly called CQ enough so that if they were going to find me, they certainly had plenty of opportunity. I also missed the 1200 QSOs goal, only reaching 1044 Qs. So I did much better at setting goals than I did at reaching them. hi ... Well there is allways next year!

I did have another little handicap, my brother-in-law from Rhode Island came in for a visit and sort of inhibited my operating time. But that was OK too. I had not seen him in a long time and it was good that he came to see us!

I have got to say that I am very proud of the Alabama Contest Group (ACG) in that we had 31 entries in PH and 22 entries in CW for the ARRL Club Competition. I think we have a claimed score of over 4.5 million points with 53 entries! We have only been around about three years and this is great partcipation. Actually there was sort of a rivalry that has developed between the ACG and SECC which stimulated great partcipation from both clubs! The real winner of this rivalry was Sweepstakes! with lots more participation from Alabama and Georgia. In fact K4TD complained that "it is hard to get a decent run going in Alabama now that their are so many ACGers actively giving out the AL QSOs and MULTs"! Hopefully this trend will continue in the contest to come! Sri Rick!

Enjoyed hearing so many stations on with 50 or more years of Amatuer Radio! I had some folks with a CHECK at 48 and 49. It was wonderful to work those stations. Additionally, worked alot of stations with an 07 and 08 CHECK. Great to hear these newcomers to this great facet of our hobby.

OK, this is it. Thanks again to all for the QSO, hope that I can catch you in another contest real soon. Take care es 73! -- KC4HW
