2009 ARRL 160 Meter Contest

12/07/2009 | VE3CUI Conditions were great here this year, & I had my usual annual "fix" of Topband doings!

It's almost inconceivable that I've been at this thing now, off & on, since (I believe) 1974-75: back then I ran a Johson Ranger-1 transmitter & a Hallicrafters S-77A receiver. The antenna was an 80-meter dipole tuned to 160 by way of a HB transmatch! Despite the 25-KHz sub-bands, LORAMN QRM, etc., I made around 125 QSOs...

Those were, indeed, the days!

My biggest pet peeve this year was the North American ops who totally ignored the idea of the DX window: I heard several outfits from this side (who should know better) engaged in domestic "runs" of QSOs---right on top of DX stations...!

Very bad form, IMHO. That sort of behaviour does nothing at all to encourage participation from DX stations in this event, who have little incentive to do so right from the start, by virtue of the rules...
