K5GJ/R
January 2010 was a mixture of HIGHS and LOWS for the newly renamed K5GJ/r Rovermobile: Unfortunately, all the HIGHS occurred before the contest started. We left Austin (EM10) on time headed for a start in EL28. The band was wide open and we were hearing folks all along the Gulf Coast... 15 minutes before the start, the bands tanked and that was the last decent tropo we heard all weekend. Add 3 cold front passages to the route and the rest was LOWS. The consensus among the Roadrunner Microwave Group is this January could be the worst contest propagation ever!.
Jim WD5IYT drove and I operated 6M through 10Ghz. In spite of the conditions we still managed to have a great time, hand out a few new grids to folks, and generally burn up gas. We found a few new locations in South and North Texas. Maybe next time we can get some decent contacts with them.
The important statistics: 162 QSOs, 950miles, 73gallons >> 2.2Q/gal Hi! Thanks to all that followed us around. FYI: K5GJ/r is MUCH easier than WD0ACD/r to contest with. 73, Greg -- K5GJ
