2010 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/26/2010 | N0JK A slow contest - I noted no tropo at all on 2M and up. No Es on 6M.

I operated early Sunday morning from EM18 in the contest. Very cold and windy (gusts to 40 mph) at the "Cattle Pens" in the heart of the Flint Hills. My fingers almost froze getting the antennas together and on the mast just after dawn. Wondered "why am I doing all this?"

But a solid SSB meteor scatter contact with W9RM EN52 near Chicago on 6 Meters at 1435 UTC gave me a warm glow! Not bad for 10W and a basic 2 el yagi. (design courtesy WB2AMU)

I heard N8XA/p EM89 calling W9RM with a good signal on 6M afterwards. Sounded like E-skip - Ax was in loud and steady for a couple of minutes. But his signal faded down by the time he had worked Jay, W9RM. N4QWZ was heard briefly, and that was it for meteor scatter.

2M flat, no tropo. Managed QSOs with N0LL EM09, K0CIY EM25 and N0IRS/WR0F EM29. Best DX around 250 miles with 10 watts. Also logged N0LL on 6M. Nil heard from the KB0HH multi-op crew in EM06. Had nice contacts with Rick, W0RT in EM27 on both 6 & 2M. -- N0JK
