01/27/2010 | WB1Z I was very active in ham radio and the January VHF Sweepstakes contest about 15-20 years ago, and currently don't really have much of a useful setup. But I've been keeping track of the local club's mailing list, and on Thursday before the contest a message came through from KK1W that he was going to run a multi-op using the Hampden County Radio Association callsign WB1Z, and that anyone was welcome to come to his house to put in some operating time. I had the itch to do some operating, so I decided to go check it out and I brought my 12-year old son Andrew with me. We had a great time at Jim's house. I made a few contacts, and then we let Andrew give it a try. He worked a half dozen stations and was thrilled when he worked a new grid that we didn't have.
