2010 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes

01/30/2010 | KC8KSK I traveled to my former home QTH in WV during the contest weekend to visit with family. That prevented me from operating on Saturday. But on the way back to my current home QTH in SC on Sunday, I stopped off at Pilot Mountain State Park, NC, EM96.

My initial intent was to operate from one of the trails on the mountain but I arrived at the summit parking lot with temps that I believe were in the upper 30's and rain/fog. I had brought an arrow portable antenna for 2 and 432 that I did not even uppack because of the cold rain!

So I made the best of the situation just working portable in the car with a small mag-mount triband vertical. One of the highlights was working 2 stations on 223.5 FM on 300 mW! Elevation sure helps! I was able to hear several stations I could not work because of my antenna limitation.

Equipment used was a Yaesu FT-817 and VX-7R. As always, much fun! 73! -- KC8KSK
