JOTA 2009
FN42 Middlesex County
Pack 79 Cub Scouts from St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Andover, Massachusetts visited and operated station WQ1Z QTH in Lowell, MA from 8:00am to Noon local time.
We also had a mix of participants; nine cub scouts, one boy scout from Troop 79, siblings and a local Scoutmaster enjoyed the morning contacting various stations in the US. More notables were the exciting call to our CQ CQ JAMBOREE on 14.286.00 MHz by WA4USN and the scouts aboard the USS Yorktown! We also had a nice contact into Montreal, Canada and spoke to two fine scouts.
The large YAESU world map came in handy as the scouts located Estonia. We discussed the passage of the wireless signal across the mighty Atlantic Ocean from that distant land to our ears here in Eastern Massachusetts.
Jim, Joe, Arthur, Andrew, Jacob, Daniel, Nicholas, John, Ethan and Eriq all reported good contacts and had fun. Imagine over three hours without video games and guitar hero?
Scouts had an opportunity to ask questions and discuss simple morse code exercises. We even went outside to search for the antenna. The scouts were amazed at all we accomplished with a simple wire antenna strung up in the trees. They now could see that amateur radio is possible out at our camp sites without large antenna arrays.
We capped the morning of HF operation with portable VHF equipment and spoke to three friends locally through the PART of Westford 146.955 MHz/R repeater - even the repeater owner had an opportunity to talk to a scout. The boys enjoyed a well rounded JOTA morning experience - we later grouped with the Pack for a 2-hour afternoon hike.
Thanks to Den Leader Amanda for ordering JOTA Patches that each participating scout will be awarded at the October Pack meeting.
See you all down the JOTA log.
