JOTA 2009

10/18/2009 | N3ALN On a cold day in Olney, Maryland Pack 774's WEBELOS and one sibling Tiger scout traveled to Alan Muldawer's (N3ALN) house to get a taste of amateur radio. Tom Hill (KB3RXN), Cubmaster for the pack, planned the event and brought contact sheets and maps for the scouts to record the locations of their contacts.

Working some 20m, but mostly 40m wavelengths in Alan's shack, the scouts heard others from as far as Idaho, but spoke to scouts in Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Michigan, and North Carolina.

Four WEBELOS and one sibling Tiger shared their hobbies, school names, and what they planned to be for Halloween. In some cases, weather reports were exchanged, and the Olney scouts, who were warm indoors, found out that other scouts were outdoors.

Eventually, the frequencies got crowded with other hams involved in contests, and it was time to close down, but the scouts of Pack 774 got their first exposure to chewing the rag. -- KB3RXN
