2010 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/19/2010 | K2QO/r

Another June contest is over and the two thing that  were huge standouts were the great 6M openings all weekend and the camaraderie. What fun! My rover partner W2TAU and I did the short version of our "normal" rove covering 6 grids and about 400 miles.

6M: We had some super openings that spanned most of the weekend. Unfortunately, not so many stations made it in the log. The guys on the southern end of the circuit said it was like being a DX on 20M with lots of calls to wade through. Any rover has a disadvantage in the pileup with exception of calling "rover" an extra time or two.

But maybe the most fun was chasing down the other rovers out on the road in our neck of the woods. KC2QZF/r, AB2YI/r and KC2PLJ/r all both out in force banging out the Qs. While heading to dinner on Saturday, worked KC2PLJ/r who was on our favorite FN22 spot. We cajoled him into coming to dinner with us and had a nice meal in Cazenovia, NY. To our amazement, Mike, who we've worked in previous contests, is a self taught, self Elmer'ed operation. He's only been out a few time and he is making excellent headway. Nice!

Sunday included the traditional rover gathering in Leroy, NY. KC2QZF/r and his partner K9KVN joined in with AB2YI/r for the Italian buffet. If is always fun comparing notes with other rover out on the road.

Without enough prep time prior to the rover, we elected to go Limited. I tried this category in for the first time in September 2009 when I went out by myself. I was really curious to see how it would work with two operators and I was surprised. The front seat ran 6 and 432 while the back handled 2 and 222.

Time to strategize for CQWW VHF, August and September! See you out on the road.
