2010 ARRL Field Day

06/29/2010 | KP4FD The Puerto Rico Field Day Group, with the help of el Movimiento de Radioaficionados de Puerto Rico (MRPR), made it's second Field Day operation, this time in the new Luis Osvaldo Reyes Recreative Complex in the city of Cataño, PR. What we can say is "Wow, the bands were wide open!. we started mounting at 9am with newcomer Jose-WP4JE going up a lightpost to put a rope for to later pull up a set of dipoles. Then the carp we used was mounted, and the tables prepared and the stations mounted, and sure the emergency power of two gwnerators! Meanwhile Jimmy-KP3BR was constructing on site the dipoles with Dennis-WP4DP, Angel-KP4BC and Jose-WP4OFC, my friend Edgar-NP4EG was mounting his Mosley, which was the charmer for the event. Plus Fernando Reyes-WP4KS, leader of the MPRP was testing one of the portable generators used. When 2pm came, Alexis-WP3ZN beagn tuning 10 meters and it was open! He began calling, giving the 2A PR exchange and I was logging. I think we were 2 1/2 hours and more than 80 QSO's! Darn, Cycle 24 was at full throttle! Later my friends of Trujillo Alto who came to visit had their turn on the radio: Jose-KP4JFR and daughter Vilmarie-NP3YL , where she had her first SSB contacts. Later went to 15 meters and worked KH6RS easily. We the took a break and had French Fries and Chicken as the main meal. Then the attention went to 20 and 40 meters, as I worked AO-51. Plus we had Ivan Feliu-WP4CPV making contacts on 80m when dusk was growing. Also had the visit of Hector-NP4FW who was recounting his CW experiences and worked a few stations. Later, at 9:40pm gat a call, it was from the QSO Show, who wanted to know how we were doing down here . . . and I almost forgot I was going to do the call! Half an hour later participated with Ted Randall and asked how we do FD on the island, a nice few minutes to expose "La Radioafición Puertorriqueña"and mentioning the other local activations. After that, a while on PSK31, pretty active!. Then went to 20 meters after midnight and the band was still open! And made a handful of contacts. And at 3am, was eating the BBQ hamburgers speciality of Alexis-WP3ZN, it was mmm . . tasty! Went later to 80 meters and did a few contacts; at 5am was pointing the Arrow to the ISS, that even thou did not hear it on-the-air, made a nice pass over us at 5am. Later a few contacts on 40m and at 9am participated on an 80 meter local FRA Net, and later contacted a few who wanted to be part of FD. Then went to 20m and 15m where here got to contact the other local FD activations. Contacts were still made after 12pm when the noise was building up. We want to say thanks to all the participants, and especially Jose Borroto from the Recreation Department of Catano, and Sabat Guadalupe who is in charge of the park for their permission and services in using the facilities. And the stations we got to put in the log. "Where next year? Let's see!" . . . 73 de Angel Santana -- WP3GW
