The "Saltyhams" from the Narragansett Bay Amateur Radio Club (NBARC) were out on the bay for Field Day 2010.
Steve KA1RCI and Brad KA1SVW set sail from the historic Edgewood Yacht Club on Friday June 25th and operated once again as NB1RI / MM from the sailing vessel Bellerophon a 46' ketch, anchored in Potter Cove off Prudence Island on Saturday June 26th and Sunday, June 27th.
Good friends and good food were the motto for our extend "field day" as we stayed out on Narragansett Bay for seven days visiting Jamestown on Monday, the Kickamuit River on Tuesday, back to Potter Cove on Wednesday, and then home to Edgewood on Thursday July 1st.
Rick KD1WE managed to paddle out in his sea kayak for his annual field day visit on Saturday. Rick had no problem finding us out on Narragansett Bay to check out the NB1RI / MM 2C RI operations as Brad's boat was proudly flying the ARRL Battle Flag as well as C Q and N B 1 R I signal flags.
Also, as in years past the RI National Guard Air Show was held the same weekend, from our floating field day location on the north end of Prudence Island we were able to watch the high speed events in the sky while working contacts on 6, 15, 20 and 40 meters.
On Sunday afternoon the US Air Force "Thunderbirds" started off there spectacular demonstration with a low level, high speed pass, directly over our sailboat which got everyone's attention in the quiet little cove. We even had a visit from the Portsmouth RI Fire/Rescue Boat.
Operating two six hour shifts each day for approximately 12 hours during the event we worked more than 400 contacts in 26 states, Washington DC, most of the Canadian Provinces, and many DX stations.
