2010 ARRL Field Day

07/03/2010 | N5AT

Field Day was a lot of fun and we had lots of the general public attend and learn about amateur radio.  The one MAJOR safety issue we faced was the heat.  While I realize that Field Day is traditionally held on the last weekend of June, I wish that the ARRL would recognize how dangerously hot it is in the southern states during that time of the year.  I honestly wish headquarters would reconsider this time-frame; even moving it back as little as one month would make it bearable.

In central Arkansas we dealt with daily high temperatures of 96 degrees and relative humidity around 40%.  This means that we were feeling a heat index of around 101 degrees.  Heat like that is dangerous - and I'm sure these numbers pale in comparison to the conditions in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.

PLEASE consider this.  We do put a lot of effort into ensuring that everyone is safe and is able to have fun, but there's only so much we can can do with these type of conditions.

Very Respectfully,

N5JLC
