2010 ARRL June VHF Contest

07/26/2010 | KN5O

Initially, I had no plans to seriously operate in this contest.  I thought I would only give out a few Qs.  I searched for my friends running NO5LA/R and gave them a contact while they were in EM52.  Then I searched for my friends at K5QE in EM31 and gave them a contact.  After about 30 minutes into the contest, I decided to find a spot to call CQ and give out a few more EM40 contacts, just to pass the time.  As the contest progressed, I realized that 6M was really hot.  So I stayed working the pileups.. My peak rate meter hit 300 Qs/hr.  My 10 minute rate meter peaked at 162 Qs/hr and I had many actual hours of 120 Qs/hr or better.  In fact, after about 6-7 hours, I was actually wishing the band would close so I could take a break.  Finally, I called it quits on Saturday evening thinking "Well, I had a pretty good day, so much for the contest."  Sunday morning before church, I got on again for a little while, not really expecting to do much.  Then I heard Joel, W5ZN in EM45, Arkansas.  Wow, really short skip!  Next thing you know I worked a bunch of close in grids.  Went to church and then to breakfast with XYl.. Got back about 3.5 hours later, turned the radio on and lo and behold, the band is still open.. With no real plans for the rest of the day, I got back on 6M..  Next thing you know, I pick up Georgia and South Carolina with short skip.. As the day progressed, I literally worked all the grids in the US - east of a line from North Dakota to Texas - missing only about 35 of them or so.  Then mid-day or so, the band opens west and bingo, I got the rest of the lower 48 states.  At one point, with the antenna west, I'm working grids in the Northeast, as well as the West and North.  So within the contest period, I almost worked WAS on 6M, missing only AK and HI.  (And I still need HI for my 6M WAS!).

Initial claimed sore is 1368 Qs and 292 grids - all 6M!  That was incredible!  Running ICOM 756 Pro III driving modified Drake L-4B and Mosley 2N6 yagi at 80 feet.

73,
Ted
