2010 ARRL September VHF Contest
The East River Amateur Radio Club (Bluefield, WV) crew that participated in the ARRL VHF contest on Saturday September 11 into Sunday September 12, 2010 consisted of: Gary Kadar N8GK, Jay Belt K8CTI, Roger Stefancic KC8LGR, James Woods KC8LGT, Nick Kadar W8NPK and Don Anderson WD8OOR. The contest location was at the old GTE microwave site on East River Mountain, Tazewell County, Va. positioned just to the south of the Bluefield, Va. WalMart and just to the west of the 145.49 /442.45 repeater site. Gary's GPS read: N 37 ᵒ 13' 354" W 81 ᵒ 14' 963" at 3721 feet of elevation in Grid EM97jf http://www.amsat.org/amsat/toys/gridconv.html . Gary used the Club's Yaesu FT-100D on 2 meters and Don used his FT-100 on 6 meters and 432.123 Mhz. Gary wanted to put his 2m Hy-Gain 8-el antenna on the 100 foot microwave tower but the continual rain and wind forced him to put it up at only 20 feet of elevation, shooting his signal through the foliage. Don used his Yaesu FT-100D and 6m Square loop antenna at about 20 feet with the. Gary's operating position was in the newly remodeled radio-control building at this location. Don used his personally-owned-vehicle as an operating position and worked his one 443 contact using his 6 meter antenna!
They are reporting 2-6M contacts in two different grids, 1-432 MHz contact and 11-2M contacts in 9 different grids for a total of 180 points claimed. Grids worked included: EM85, EM87, EM89, EM96, FM07, FM06, FM08, FM19, FN00 http://www.oema.us/files/Amateur_Radio_US_Grid_Square_Map.pdf . Gary told W4OF that he had heard on the band that our grid, EM97, is considered a fairly 'rare' grid as far as VHF/UHF contesting is concerned.
