2010 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)

11/22/2010 | K5BZH

Running 100 watts to a ground mounted vertical makes Phone SS a little different than those of you with better antennas or even more power. It is still a fun game or I wouldn’t do it. Most of my operation is S&P, but I did get a short run before daylight on Sunday morning. Raw score is 43,168 pts, 284 Qs, 76 sections. Worked All States!

Sections I missed were: NNY, PR, NL, and QC. Where was NNY and QC? They should not have been that tough. Never heard PR.

The last hour of the contest I thought about going QRT, things seemed slow, I was tired, but decided to stay for the last of it. That hour provided 7 more Qs and more important, a 76th section from KD2RD, NLI.

If there were a contest to determine who had the worst calls for Radio Sports, phone or CW, I would be among those in very top. Not sure why but many copy my call as KB5ZH instead of K5BZH. Then some folks hear Kilo 5 Bravo Lima Hotel, others Kilo 5 Bravo Juliet Hotel. Try it on CW sometime. To add acid to the wounds, my brother has a really good call that was issued to him in 1954, it works well on CW and phone. I’ve had my call over 55 years and its hard to dump it. There is a W5 call available that I would love to have, but I’ll probably leave it be.

Adios from West Texas.
