2010 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/02/2011 | K2JX

Another SKN in the history books !  Murphy was at my side during the event. My amp quit, one leg of my inverted is on the ground due to last weeks blizzard, and my vertical was not up to par. Yikes !

However, as usual I had a great SKN & next morning on 40 meters, boy I need practice !  My New Years resolution, work more CW with my trusty J-38 !  During SKN I was surprised that more stations were NOT calling CQ SKN or using the the SKN suffix UR 599 SKN, what's up with that ?  Another rant, a few were operating CW with a bug !  That's not allowed !  hi hi.

A short story, the J-38 key pictured was actually used by during World War II by a Signal Corps radio instructor to teach Morse code to the G.I.'s. I bought it from his son who is a Ham but his father was not. The key works great, it's as old as I am !  That say's a lot.

This was the first SKN that I did not use vintage gear, alas I culled the herd post retirement. I felt like I cheated this year using my FT-2000. Although it was a lot easier on the ears than the BC-348's I used in previous SKN's.

73  & cu nxt SKN !
