2011 ARRL Straight Key Night
Despite the terrible band conditions (including a rare January thunderstorm) and multiple vintage equipment failures, a grand time was had on SKN. Smoke was let out of two transmitters, one of which was the traditional PRC-1 Spy Radio used in previous events. The Hammarlund HQ-140X from my Novice days paired with the Viking Ranger "dream only" transmitter from those days mustered on 40 meters. 80 meters was served by the Collins twins celebrating their 60th year in 2011.
Although short on the number of contacts, nothing was lacking in their content. I was pleased to see the dominance of vintage radio during this SKN, and that provided many interesting contacts--several of which went over an hour in length. Kudos to Jeff, K3KYR, and his Heath equipment, and to Joe, W3GMS, for having the only station with a respectable chirp. The final contact with Ray, K9XE, went into overtime as we recalled our radio friendships from the early 1960s.
Keep those keys dusted off, the forearms limber, and see you next year. Cheers! Brian K9VKY
