2011 ARRL Kids Day - January

01/22/2011 | kW8KW

My 7-year-old grandson, Raiden, has been interested in grandpa's ham radio for quite a while. He likes to experiment with me at my workbench. We've made a few contacts with locals on the 70 cm repeaters but no long distance. Kid's Day was the perfect opportunity. We made up a "cheat-sheet" with the contact info, call sign plus phonetics and gave it a shot. I logged and pointed out items on the "cheat sheet" to help him through the QSO. His mom and dad joined us in the shack. He started off just fine. We were able to make 2 contacts: one with Trey at K4OSO and Maycee at N2XJ. Both junior ops were Raiden's age. He had a blast. We filled out QSL cards and dropped them in the mail. We're looking forward to the next Kid's Day! Thanks and 73.
