2011 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes
Pete, N6ZE, conducted a small Rover operation in grids DM04 & DM03 during the January 2011 ARRL VHF Sweepstakes Contest. X-YL Robin, W7PBJ, did some logging while we drove South to DM03 for her to purchase terracotta flower pots at a nursery in El Segundo, CA and she made sure that we dined at a great sea food restaurant along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu! Visibilities were great as we drove over the Santa Monica Mt. range. (This was a true cooperative venture!). An FT-100D was utilized for 6 & 2 meters, as well as 70 cm. For 223 MHz FM, a Kenwood TM-331A was used. Antennas were only vertical whips on a pickup truck: ¼ wave on 6m; a ¼ wave / ½ wave for 2m/70cm; & ¾ wave for 223.5 MHz FM. No mountain top stations were noted, many ‘regulars’ seemed to be missing, activity levels were quite low, and propagation was standard or below, gusty Santa Ana winds to 50 mph created high noise levels much of Sunday. I made 2 non- countable Aeronautical Mobile QSOs: 1 on 2m SSB and one on 70cm SSB. Other minor data: 18 single band stations worked; 9 dual band stations worked; 1 three station worked; & 6 four band stations worked. All QSOs were on phone of which approximately 15 were on FM.
