2012 ARRL Field Day

06/29/2012 | N7KN

This year we were 3A again from Table Mtn. EWA. We had to brave less than ideal weather at our QTH at 5200 ft overlooking Wilson Creek Canyon. There was wind, rain, hail, thunder, lightning (including a few close strikes). Mercifully the sun came out between storms enabling us to dry out. Even with the less than perfect weather the scenery was beautiful as always.

We had a full compliment of rigs: TS870, K3, and a TS590. All rigs where powered by gell and deep cycle batteries. The antennas included two hex beams for 20 and 15m, two ladder line dipoles and two end fed wires. The wire antennas were supported by the abundant trees.

We had 4 operators including Charlie N7KN, Rich AC7MA, Robert N7QT and Bill WA7NCL. Operation was mainly CW and SSB, with some PSK thrown in via the K3 paddles. 20m was the main producer, with 15m day time and 40m evening giving good results as well. 80m was also productive in the wee hours. Not much was heard on 10 and 6m was silent. Logging was via N3FJP software on old laptops and netbooks. Our score was and all time high thanks to reasonable good conditions, Charlie’s hex beams and some hard work on CW.

We’re looking forward to next year already!
