2012 ARRL Field Day
The QRP branch of the Rochester (MN) ARC again ran a QRP station separate from the main RARC FD effort but near them at the Gamehaven Scout Reserve. While formally separate, we join together for set-up, food, and clean-up, which lets us get points for QRP and yet share in all the social aspects of FD. We used the club call W0MXW (2A-B), while the 100-watt group used W0BM (3A).
We had a K2 and a K1, plus a VHF station. We had planned to be more relaxed this year, taking more time off for meals, sleep, and helping out over at W0BM, and indeed our 155 QSOs didn't match last year. But the bands didn't cooperate, either: 6 and 10 were dead, 15 and 80 limited, and 20 and 40 too crowded for people to hear us easily. Only CW worked reasonably well -- SSB was an exercise in frustration.
Still, it was a great weekend, of course. Next year we'll be sure to have digital available, in case SSB closes down again. And we'll try some different antennas. But we have found a good formula, and we'll try to do it again next year.
