2002 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/16/2002 | W4/ON1CFX/R Short rover session this time. Wanted to start in Cacapon state park near Winchester, VA but did not make it there in time, so decided to camp somewhere in the FM09 valley, near the Shenandoah. FM08us was next and surprisingly quiet - only met 1 rover station. Sunset was great. Had to call it a day around 11pm, only to start at 4pm Sunday on the other
Hogback Mountain near Leesburg FM19ec. The top has a friendly OM (app
700 ft) with some nice LOS into DC. Activated the 10GHz for the first time in the contest with K1RZ. FM18hw was next for the last 3 hours of the contest. Overall, great fun with lots of activity - think I have reached some of the limitations of my roving approach, given I rebuild the station from scratch at every location (most elementary run-and-gun approach (yes it is a rental)), with 3 large antennas and a 10GHz dish, and flying solo a lot of time is lost. Results were a bit less than last September, with app 200 qsos and 44 grids, for a total of 13k points. Propagation was not as good as last time. Thank you all for listening to the most annoying callsign in the contest - again. 73 de xtof W4/ON1CFX/R. -- ON1CFX
