2013 ARRL January VHF Contest
I had high hopes for a big 6 meter Es opening Saturday in the contest. Friday afternoon before the 'test K6MIO/KH6 Hilo, HI worked all the way to the midwest and Gulf coast on 6 meters. I set up portable in the Flint Hills. Weather was great Saturday afternoon - 66 deg F, like spring - but no prop. No Es or tropo enhancement. Despite no tropo enhancement worked W0KT EN21 on 2M with 10 watts and the 7 el M2. N0LL - usually a "chip shot" was pretty weak on 2 meters and Larry could not hear me on 432. Saturday evening I had about an hour of Es on 6 meters to W4 starting around 0220 UTC. W4IMD, W4NH and others from Georgia and Alabama were loud at times. Band died and I had packed away the yagi ~ 0310 UTC. The sky was clear, the stars were really bright and it was dead quiet, as I was miles away from anyone. As I was coiling up the coax some coyotes howled in the distance, then W4ZRZ EM63 popped up S-9 CQing on 6. Worked him with just 10 watts and the mag. mount vertical on the car! Always good to leave a radio on 6 "just in case." This was the last Es I heard. Not much depth to the opening. Stations west of me like N0LL EM09 seemed to be in the Es footprint better. A cold front came through Sunday morning and didn't go back out.
