2013 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/12/2013 | K7NG

From Iron Mountain in CN72:   We actually did better than I thought we would, mainly thanks to excellent 6M conditions.  We were a bit disappointed that 2M really didn't produce like we'd hoped.

Murphy works in strange ways.  (1) Due to a mistake I made followed by an instrumentation problem, we thought we had something broken in the 432 MHz stack and the wind was blowing too hard all Saturday to bring the antennas down and look.... so I neglected 432 MHz completely until about 9 AM Sunday when we retested the antennas and found they were fine.  So I only made 4 qso's on 432 MHz (and none on 222 FM which wasn't a surprise). (2) All  the antennas stayed up thru a day and a half of nearly gale-force wind but when we were taking them down Sunday afternoon (in calm conditions) the 6M mast inexplicably bent over while I was walking it down, bending the 6M reflector element and rendering the mast unusable for the future.  Maybe I can use part of it for the cross-member of an H-frame to hold UHF antennas.    We'd like to thank everyone we worked and we hope we made CN72 a big hit. -- K7NG
