2013 ARRL June VHF Contest
It has been 14 years since my last VHF contest on one of my favorite peaks in the Santa Susanna Mountains at 2800’ above the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. I loaded up my gear in a 35+ pound backpack to make the one hour hike to the top which was covered in fog that later burned off. I operated QRP portable at DM04 with an FT-817 at 5 watts to a Buddipole dipole for 6 meters SSB and an Arrow beam with 3 elements for 2 meter SSB and 7 elements for 432 MHz SSB. HT’s for 220 MHz and 1.2 GHz with rubber duck antennas rounded out the gear. I operated for 3½ hours on Sunday only, figuring I would be a rare station since most of the activity was the day before. My longest contacts were a VE7, VA6, and XE2 on 6 meters but also was managed to work San Diego with my 1 watt 220 HT. My totals were 70 QSOs with 18 grid squares. I also had a first time eyeball with KB6C, a local repeater owner, who just happened to be hiking in the area. Next time I will stay longer on the hill and not wait so many years to operate the contest again. 73 de Scott
