2013 ARRL June VHF Contest

06/25/2013 | K9AKS

Took my travelling QRP portable operation to central Kentucky.  A nice site, Radio Ridge, was made available to me thanks to the help of K4FT and W5MX.  I really appreciate their help.

I left the 1296 loop yagi in my garage at home, but it would have made little difference. It was a struggle to work through  poor conditions on 144, 222, and 432--but I managed a few nice contacts.  All but a handful of my six meter contacts were made Sunday between about 9:30 a.m. and noon local time--don't remember the last time I did so poorly on six.. The band was still open at midday when a monster storm hit.  It put me off the air for about three hours--I was sure the antennas could come down, but somehow they stayed up.  Guess I need bigger ones.

Overall, a low score and not much fun on the radio; but I had a nice trip and will probably do it again.  It is hard to get it out of my blood after 54 years of operating portable in VHF contests.
