2013 ARRL Field Day
Operated a true 1B field day station this past weekend in the remote desert of Utah in the San Rafael Desert. The station was completely solar powered, but was running 100 watts. I brought out my new FT-DX3000 and my MFJ tuner to run two antennas. I setup my main antenna as a full wave 80m delta loop ( vertical ) using a painters pole at the edge of a 1000 foot tall cliff, and had a G5RV oriented N/S as a secondary.
Overall, it was a fair bit to setup for a single operator station in the middle of nowhere, but it went smoothly. The weather was nice, although a bit windy. Band conditions were a bit rough on Saturday, but amazing Sunday morning. From 12pm-2am on Saturday, I made 100 contacts. From 7:30am to 12pm on Sunday, I made another 110 contacts. I was only working SSB this go around. So overall I made over 200 contacts working solo as my first real field day attempt.
Overall, a successful field day in the true spirit of a remote emergency station. My solar held up and my station could have continued to run indefinitely. All done with a single person and a bit of planning.
As you can see from the attached photos, just being in the location alone was worth the experience.
