2013 ARRL Field Day
The 2013 Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club Field Day / Babylon Town ARES was one of the best we had since our first one in 1976. The group operated 5F with a GOTA and VHF station in the park adjacent to our EOC at the Babylon Town Hall in North Lindenhurst, Long Island, New York . We even had solar power on one of our communications trailers. We also had the use of a 86 foot boom which made putting up antennas much easier and then doubled as a mast for our six and two meter beams. We had many non-ham visitors and each one was given a packet of information about Ham Radio and the club's free licensing classes. Many youngsters and inactive hams stopped by and they were taken to the GOTA tent to "Get on the air". Visiting local representatives from served agencies and local politicians were each given a tour of our facilities and literature about Amateur Radio. Because of our activities during and after hurricane Sandy, we had more than the usual amount of interest from local visiting politcians. We tried something new this year, a poster and "self serve" table setup for sending NTS Radiograms. It was successful and we are going to carry this concept on at Emergency Shelters in the future. The food was excellent as usual and our barbeque chef K2BBQ out did himself in serving up some really tasty food. The weather was perfect for the entire event. LONG LIVE THE ARRL FIELD DAY!
