2013 ARRL Field Day

07/20/2013 | K6CLX

The Calexico Amateur Radio Society K6CLX was on the air for the first in the ARRL Field Day 2013 event, we had a great time setting our two radio station with the great effort from the participating club members Nestor K6JTT, Francisco N6CRX, Tim KJ6VGM, Timo KJ6YPA, Larry Jr KI6ZXU, Kevin KJ6DDS and Larry KI6YAA, we also had a great help from our friend Larry Smith WA6LAW and our host Mr Montes for letting us use his property to set up our station. We also had a visit from some of the local ham radio operators who stop by after concluding their exam session.

Our working conditions were two antennas, a 80 meters horse fence antenna from KF4BWG and a R8 Cushcraft vertical multi band. Our radios were an Icom IC-7000, a Kenwood TS-430S and another Icom 746pro as backup. We mounted our 80m dipole antenna on a palm three about 40 feet high and we setup the vertical on a tripod on the middle of the yard, both antennas performed with decent results.

Hamburger cook off and some other snack were around all the time and KJ6VGM surprised us with a hot jug of coffee and donuts to recover from a long operating night. As we know Imperial Valley is known for it's extreme weather with temperatures rising up to 120 F, but this weekend the weather was in our favor with a tolerant heat during the day and cold night with a breathtaking full moon.

With 500+ contacts we can call a successful participation, we will be looking to schedule again for next year and we will go forward with what we learn from these experience, special thanks to Tim and Nestor for their outstanding operation during the night time.

We are looking to catch you down the log next year on field day and thanks for your support!
