2013 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)
I operated QRP again this year from the club station of the Nittany ARC, W3YA, at 2200' ASL on a mountain ridge near State College, PA. I took my own radios, Elecraft K2 and a Yaesu FT-100, both at 5W, connected to a computer for logging with N1MM Logger and used the clubs antennas which included 4 element yagis on 60' and 80' towers and dipole antennas for 40/80m. I missed the clean sweep this year (PR) but last year was the only time I ever had a sweep, so I'm used to missing it by one. I had more QSOs this year, though, resulting in a personal high score for this event. Normally as a QRPer I prefer CW contesting or at least mixed CW/Phone for events such as the PA QSO Party, so I'm not sure what draws me to the Sweepstakes Phone, nostalgia I guess. Last year I was 5th place QRP overall and this year I hope I was able to at least maintain that if not improve upon it. I started about 2 hours late but figured that I should have enough time to get the whole 24 hours of operating time. Somehow, though, I was about 1-1/2 hours short. I should have called CQ more often, a lesson learned that I keep telling myself. Even running QRP, with good conditions like we had this past weekend I should definitely have been calling CQ! Many stations told me I had a good strong signal for QRP. I figured I had to be loud somewhere! A few stations struggled to pull me through and usually did. I thank those who spent the extra effort to pull me through. I find it ironic that those stations actually thanked me for *my* patience! Well, I finished with just shy of 500 QSOs and just over 81k points (unofficially), up a bit from my 77k last year. It was fun and I'm hopeful that I can operate the event again next year!
