2013 ARRL 160 Meter Contest

12/09/2013 | WD8DSB

Goal was to beat my previous performances, and this was my best score yet from my small station.  Didn't think propagation was great to the West Coast especially during the first night except for some brief periods of enhanced signals, but no static crashes this year made for a very pleasant contest.  Wound up with 758 total contacts and 77 multipliers (71 ARRL sections and 6 DX stations) for a total claimed score of 118,118.

TX antenna was a 68 foot base loaded vertical wire hanging straight down from a very tall Sycamore tree with 55 short buried ground radials (2500 feet of radials).  Ran 100 watts output using my old Kenwood TS-180s using a 500 hertz receive filter.  My 3 small point fed receive pennants (51.6% of full size) were very helpful again this year.

Best DX this year was TM6M and S59A, and wish we could improve the 1830 to 1835 DX window as numerous US stations made it their home during the contest making it nearly impossible to hear DX.

Second night I learned just how quick I could use the restroom while continuing to keep my run frequency (it helped that the number of new stations was becoming few and far between).

What fun, and great contest as always.

73,
Don (wd8dsb)
