2014 School Club Roundup - February

02/18/2014 | K1BBS

The joy, wonder, and magic of ham radio is alive and well ... you can see it in the faces of my students.  It's amazing to watch their expressions as they respond to the human voice ... a bit of a novelty since they have spent their lives communicating through text.  No offence to those who enjoy the digital modes (that's what is so great about ham radio ... there is something (and room) for everybody), but trying to sell ham radio to teenagers with the digital modes puts them to sleep like Sominex.  Put a microphone in their hands and radio comes alive.  This is more fun than anyone outside of ham radio could ever know.  Not even a day and a half of snow days took us off the air ... couldn't give up 10 hours of operating time just because we had no school.  With parental permission, of course, we got enough students to school to keep K1BBS running.  As we trudged through the snow (coming horizontally) to adjust the antenna support system, one student exclaimed ... "ham radio is an adventure!" ...  that it is.  Thanks to all who participated in and supported this event.  As they say, see you down the log.
