KB1FWC
The Connecticut Amateur Radio League of Youth (CARLY, KB1FWC) had its best Field Day event ever this year. Four youngsters, all under 18 years of age -- R.J., KB1FFV, Mike, KB1FNZ, Tomas, KB1GJI, and Andy, AB1BA -- made nearly 650 Qs, including almost 60 on CW by our new Extra, Andy. Whether using a keyer or straight key, he was able to impress and amaze his cohorts by logging each and every attempt! Thanks to donations, CARLY operated 2A from their own camping trailer (and a loaner trailer) using power from their own generator. Antennas used were a 2-element 3-band dipole (from QST of course) and monoband dipoles for 40 and 80M which they made as club projects. They were even successful in gaining 200 bonus points for passing a Radiogram to the CT SM on 80M Phone Net and copying the W1AW Field Day bulletin on SSB. During teardown, the group was overheard discussing future improvements. "We need a big trash can outside each camper next year!" said Pres. Andy. Needless to say, Field Day will continue to be a very enjoyable event as long as these youngsters have anything to say about it! (Pix to come) -- K3UFG
