2014 ARRL August UHF Contest

08/04/2014 | WV9E

Set-up took some time, dragging the camper and then the portable tower up to the bluff top camp site.   Was ready at start whistle.  I hadn't been able to put in a serious August attempt in a couple years, so I was looking forward to this one.  This was the first time I would be armed with both 902 and 1296.....( with this or that issue causing  fails on those bands in prior years).

Conditions were nothing much, about normal for summer.  We had a short local enhancement early Sunday, I had a full quieting FM QSO/chat on 902.1 w/ W0ZQ/R on my 2.5 watt HT.   I was surprised that FM worked as well as it did.  My transverter decided to act up, so I was stuck. That was the hightlite of my contest.

The only down side was the very few stations on.  2 local stations (en43) were able work 222 and 432. Others that had just one or two bands were good for new grids, but we need lots more upper midwest stations to jump on the UHF+ wagon.

Can't complain too loud, ended up with 53 Q's,  around 8,000 points. New grids on 902 and 1296, had fun, XYL was happy, everything worked as planned.  I am quite happy. A UHF Field Day for me which I plan to repeat in September.

Dave, WV9E (en43)
