2014 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)
I was very proud of the work that both myself and Phil (KC5AMQ) did so well with this contest. It started on a cold day outside when we met at our local amateur radio club's facility, which happily allowed us to use their station (KC2ELX) pictured with my callsign set for the screensaver for promotional use during the sweepstakes. However, we came in to start late because we had to do maintenance to the antennas as we discovered that the club’s windom was knocked down during a windstorm.
Operations and propogation throughout the contest have been very unusual. Band propogation was all over the place as 15m seen quite an opening that I have never seen before, in which I did a lot of the long haul QSOs on while Phil prepped food and the heater. During the blazing cold on Saturday night, both Phil and I did our hardest to work out as many contacts as possible as the number of new sections we needed grew smaller. Our luck broke at 2334z on Sunday when we finally got our last section we needed to get our first ever clean sweep as a VE2 station came loud and clear to us after storming through the pileup! We also gave another station in WWA his clean sweep thanks to our section which made us feel proud of ourselves. Overall, We both enjoyed this year’s Sweepstakes and hopefully can do it again as a team next year.
