2014 ARRL November Sweepstakes (Phone)

12/04/2014 | K4OV

This year, we focused less on last-minute station upgrades and more on getting sleep and relaxing before the contest.  Our result was our best score ever!  We started out strong, with 6 of the first 7 hours over 100/hour.  Rob K4OV got the hot bands and had some great runs, and we went to bed ahead of any previous year's pace.  Then, less than an hour into Saturday morning - BOOM!  One of the amps blew.  With much grumbling and unhappiness, we pressed onward.  It took a great afternoon run by Lee N1BA to get us back on track.  The final hours were tough, calling CQ and searching for new folks, but we ended up breaking 1900 Q's for the first time.

Station-wise, this year we either repaired or replaced every antenna.  The one new antenna was added very quickly Saturday afternoon - a 3-el wire beam for 15m, pointed NW.  For under $10, that became our main 15m antenna!  With almost all of our Q's coming from our wire antennas, we did great with our "Q's/antenna $."

Thanks to everyone for all your contacts and repeats.
