2015 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/30/2015 | K3PX

I look forward to SKN every year, but this year it seemed to be very special, very good band conditions, great QSO's, some great fists, and enjoyed working the vintage gear used by many. I made 25 QSO's on 40 and 80 meters in 14 states plus DL4KCA in Germany. My rig was a Kenwood TS-570, Ameritron AL-811H if needed, MFJ-962-D antenna tuner to 450 ohm ladder line and a 140 Ft. Zepp up about 30 feet. My key was my favorite and old reliable long arm Danish made marine key. It is rare that I find an op using one of these, so I was surprised to work Craig, W3CRR in MD who was also using an one. I believe it is one of the best keys ever made and I keep going back to it from my collection of 70 or 80 various keys, bugs and paddles. Too many keys, too little time. I worked Brian, K9VKY in WPA using his WWII vintage PRC-1 spy radio set in a suitcase. Great 599 signal for 12 watts output and a great fist we QSO'ed for 2 hours plus. There were some great QRP QSO's....AA8MI at 5 watts; N4HAY, 5 watt Elecraft; AA1VX, 5 watts; K5SOH only 3 watts and a great signal from Houston, TX. All had very good signal strength. Nice QSO's with W1HNJ, Ed at the MacKay Marine Station, WCL in MA with a nice chat about marine radio history; W8TY, Jon in Lima, OH with nice chat of our past experiences with the famous Fair Radio Sales; WA2SON chat of the old days; and W1LVT, Len with his QTH bordering VE land!  Had a great time, looking forward to next year. Please forgive me for the very late soapbox entry but too much going on with the weather/snow storms and a serious bout with the flu........73 to all, hope to see you all next SKN. 73 and DX, Bob, K3PX, Wayne Co., PA.
