2015 School Club Roundup - February

02/22/2015 | K1D

This was the first School Club Roundup  for the staff and students at All Saints STEAM Academy, Middletown, Rhode Island but all were delighted with the results.   Despite a couple feet of snow on the ground and brutal wind chills for the week, we managed to get an inverted-V into the air securing the mast to playground equipment.  A group of eight middle school students who have been spending 90 mins each week on Tech licensing coursework formed the core operator team and managed to operate 4 hours each day.  Many of the students had just completed a season of competing in a national cyber security competition and were highly sensitized to communication systems that rely on vulnerable infrastructure.  They appreciated both ham radio's simplicity and ability to leverage digital modes like PSK. Teachers brought their grade 3 through 8 classes through the temporary radio shack and were given presentations by the older students who were waiting their turn to take the microphone.  The effort was a major success and teachers are keen to see it return later in the year.
