2015 ARRL Field Day

06/29/2015 | K9OR

The North Shore Radio Club once again operated from a park in Lake Forest, IL as 3A with a GOTA station, WM9Q. This year we decided to simplify things a bit and used only dipole antennas on the 3A stations. A ground mounted 4-BTV and a G5RV were used for GOTA. Weather was just perfect, 75 degrees and sunny. However, the sun's recent solar activity seemed to be quite apparent on Saturday afternoon. SSB signals would be loud and clear one second and then almost disappear into the noise the next. Fortunately, conditions settled down later and appeared to become more normal again. Our GOTA station was extremely busy. We not only had several boy scouts visit us, but many club members brought their children to give that station a try. We had a GOTA mentor, KC9USC, who did a superb job of getting people comfortable at the mike and making contacts. We also managed to collect all the bonus points except for the satellite QSO. We truly had a great time this year and now begins the anticipation period until the results are published in QST.
