2015 ARRL Field Day
I operated by myself this year. In the past, I ALWAYS operated with a large club group. I had always wanted to operate QRP on solar power/batteries. That does not often appeal to large groups. I just decided to give it a go this year. I operated literally in the middle of nowhere in the desert inside my 4 x 6 Wells Cargo trailer. No power lines nearby or any other impediments other than a lightning storm and a scorpion (although I saw him first before he could cause problems).
I used an Alpha Antenna - vertical (bought at Dayton in '14) and a Yaesu 817. I used a 950 watt gasoline generator to run my fan (as you see in photo) and lights. The transmitter was 100% solar/battery. I made a lot of contacts considering the limitations. It reached 108 degrees on Saturday afternoon. I never got below the low 80's at night. I worked phone, CW and PSK. I also easily copied the ARRL CW Field Day message. I had a ton of fun although completely alone. At least I can say I did it. Here are a couple photos of my setup.
