2015 ARRL Field Day

06/30/2015 | K4RY

Not only was this my first Field Day, it was also the first Field Day for Auburn University's Amateu Radio Club, K4RY, of which I'm VP.  We set up our HF rig on top of a hill in the nearest state park, under a pavilion with a few power outlets.  We strung up a homebrew inverted V antenna in the nearest tree and went at it.  Meanwhile, those not making contacts worked on a delicious shrimp boil and talked to curious students and families who had stopped by when they saw and heard the radios.  Thanks to Field Day, we have many new students interested in getting licensed.

We wouldn't have had nearly as much success if it wasn't for the local hams who came out to support and encourage us.  As I posted on the K4RY Facebook page, "Thank you to everyone who came out today and helped make this year's Field Day (the club's first in recent memory) absolutely awesome. From loaning equipment, offering advice, cooking food, getting on the air, and making new friends, all of you showed what amateur radio is all about!".
