2015 ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest
This was my best ever 10GHz+ contest. I was able to participate both weekends and visited three grids in that time. I ended up with 70 QSO's, 40 unique call signs, and just a hair less than 20k points (I think two or three more Q's and I'd have made it!); nine of the Q's were on 24GHz.
The first Saturday, I went with Tony WA8RJF to FN02nu, south of Buffalo. This provided a great day of working up and down Lake Erie and a lot of W8's and VE3's. The highlight of that day was working K1RZ in FM19jh on Rainscatter, including SSB!
The next day, Sunday, I went to my old stand by FN02xu (Transit Rd, about 35 miles SW of Rochester). This a great location in all directions except NW. I was joined by Jarred KF2MR, on his first outing on 10GHz. There were several highlights that day- one was hearing Jarred make his first DX contact on 10GHz with one of the VE's. The second was working N1JEZ and W1FKF on MT. Washington (FN44ig) at 567km. The third was working K1RZ AGAIN, this time on pure troposcatter, at 400km.
Fast forward to the second weekend of the contest. I went to FN22xp with WB2BYP and we were met there by KF2MR- to Boyd Thacher Park, SW of Albany. We had a great day of working the stations on the mountain tops in New England, and ended it with SSB QSO's with AF1T and W1MKY on Martha's Vineyard (FN41ql).
I drove home Saturday night, and got home after a 4 hour drive, pretty much exhausted. But on Sunday, I went out again to FN02xu (Transit Rd) and had another great day. I worked W1EX, W1FKF, and KA1OJ on Mt. Wachusett at 507km, VE3FN on Mt. Tremblant in Quebec (467km), and once again, AF1T- this time in FN41oi on Martha's Vineyard, for my best DX of the contest, at 622km!
We don't have many stations still active in the Rochester area on 10GHz anymore, but between BYP, MR and myself, we're trying to get people interested again. At one time, we had ove r20 stations on the air with 10GHz gear!
We're looking forward to next year and a bigger noise from Western NY!!!
