2015 ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest

10/17/2015 | N1JEZ

Overall, a pretty good year on the microwaves.

The first weekend I operated from Mt Kearsarge FN43bj on Satuday and Mt Washington FN44ig on Sunday. Saturday saw quite a few contacts on 24 GHz with W1FKF, KA1OJ, W1EX, W1JHR and WA2BTR. On Sunday, I added W1GHZ and KA1LEX to the list of 24 GHz stations and also worked KA1LEX on 47 GHz. KA1LEX turned out to be my best on 47 GHz at 69 km. Even though we were working through a heavy cloud cover, Randy's signal with just a mixer was S3-S5 on SSB.

One notable contact on 24 GHz was with George, W1JHR. When I was pointed direct, I heard nothing! But elevating a few degrees, I found George's signal as pure rain scatter. There was no tone to the CW at all. We worked quite easily and then switched to FM where he was full quieting.

My best distance on 10 GHz during the first weekend was with Dave, K2DH at 569 km. Russ, K2TXB and Matt, KB1VC were second at 491 km. Ray, VE3FN at 406 km was third. On 24 GHz, it was 194 km with W1JHR.

The second weekend I operated from Mt Washington FN44ig on Saturday and Mt Mansfield, FN34om on Sunday.

Working the Canadian stations to the North from Mt Washington is always a challenge from the usual spot where I set up. This is in the South facing parking lot. To work north to FN35, the Mtn is in the way, so I usually move. This year I did hear VE2JWH who was in FN35qi without moving. In the picture, you can see my 10 GHz dish is elevated and pointed back towards the large FM antenna on top of the Mtn. I heard Jimmy's CW scattering off the structure.

On Sunday, I was in and out of clouds all day on Mt Mansfield. Early in the morning, Randy, KA1LEX and I worked 10/24/47 easily. We set up on 78 GHz, but ran out of time to complete as Randy had to leave. Sunday did see my best 24 GHz distance for the contest working KA1OJ at 240 km.

Ray, VE3FN was in FN26rf. That direction is right through the Mtn where I was. In the picture, you can see my dish set up looking over the trees. I found Ray's signal bouncing off something about 45 degrees off the direct heading. We did work quite easily.

My final score ended up just under 28k. Overall, I thought activity was down a bit, but still ended up with a decent score and working some very interesting QSO's.
